Snow Storm While You’re Moving? Keep Calm and Read These Tips
Regardless of the season, portable storage containers are essential for any move. If you’re moving in the winter, be prepared for possible snowstorms. You never know when one might be brewing, even if the weather forecast says otherwise.
If you have to move in inclement weather, keep calm and follow these tips. It may take a bit more effort to get from point A to point B, but rest assured it can be done safely and efficiently.
Plan Your Travel Route
If the storm is or was intense, make sure your travel route is clear. You can typically check with the local police department, to find out about delays. The last thing you want is to get stuck en route. If you’re moving to another state or far away, have a backup plan for overnight accommodations.
It’s also recommended that you take an emergency contact list with you. Include numbers such as the Highway Patrol and roadside assistance. Give a family member a copy of your travel plans, even if you have a cell phone. Cell phones don’t always work, in the event of a blizzard.
Turn on Utilities
It’s very important to have the utilities turned on, in your new home, before you actually start living there. It’s best to do this two days in advance, if possible. This gives you the chance to make sure everything is working correctly and that the house will be warm when you’re moving everything in.
Make Room for the Moving Truck and Portable Storage Containers
You want the moving truck to be as close to the door as possible. Make sure the driveway and sidewalks are shoveled and clear. Put down salt or sand. This helps to eliminate the possibility of a slip and fall. Have shovels on hand, in case you need to use them throughout the day.
If necessary speak with neighbors, who park on the street, and ask them if they’re willing to make alternative arrangements for the day. Most will be accommodating to the situation.
Protect the Interior of Your New Home
Protect high traffic areas with plastic tarps or large pieces of cardboard. You don’t want to ruin your carpet or flooring with snow, rock salt and sand. Cardboard is the best choice for carpeting. Use small tacks, to keep it in place.
Keep Hot Drinks Available
Whether you’re moving your belongings yourself or someone is helping you, make sure to keep hot drinks on hand. Coffee, hot chocolate and tea is always appreciated, on a cold day. Go one step further and have extra hats and gloves available, for those who might need them.
