Home Renovations You Should Consider This Summer
With the first day of Summer being June 21st, 2023, we’re quickly approaching the ‘warmer’ half of the year. While that seems like it’s still a long shot away, like most things, it will approach much faster than we all anticipate. The good news is that we can start planning our summer projects and home renovations much earlier!
In this article, we’ll discuss how you can get prepared for your summer renovations along with some renovation ideas for the different rooms and areas in your home.
Preparing for Renovations
To ensure that your renovations go smoothly, it’s important that you take the time to plan everything out. Consider things like the time it’s going to take to complete, what you’re going to do in the meantime if a room or area of your home is inaccessible, where you’re going to keep your materials and equipment, and of course, the financial aspect of your project.
If you’re unsure about the amount of work you’re signing up for then we strongly recommend that you hire licensed renovation contractors to complete your project - and be sure to always check out reviews or get a referral from your neighbours, friends, or family.
Renovation Ideas by Room
Depending on your needs, wants, or budget, the area of your home that you’re planning to renovate can vary quite drastically. While you may be able to improve some rooms with small changes such as lighting fixtures or new countertops – other rooms or areas may require more work and planning. In this section we’ll briefly cover some of the most popular renovation projects for the different sections of your home.
Kitchen Renovations
When most people think about renovations, the first room that comes to mind is the kitchen. This is a big one on everyone’s to-do list as it is typically one of the rooms that you and your family will spend the most time in – and is also the hardest to cover up with paintings or nice furniture since your cabinets and countertops are not moveable.
If you don’t have a large budget to do a full kitchen renovation, consider doing small things like painting your cabinetry, getting a new countertop, or just updating your appliances. Every little bit will help you get one step closer to your dream kitchen!
Bathroom Renovations
One of the most dreaded home renovation projects is the bathroom renovation. Depending on what needs to be done, this can put one (or your only) bathroom out of commission for however long the renovations take. However, putting that aside - with a little patience and TLC you can really make your bathroom shine!
Don’t worry about doing everything all at once as sometimes ‘a little goes a long way’. Depending on your budget as well, consider some of the following bathroom renovation ideas: new vanity and fixtures, new flooring, new mirror or medicine cabinet, replace tiles, upgrade shower or bathtub. By doing things in pieces you can also help eliminate some of the chaos and disruption that may occur due to not being able to use one of your bathrooms.
Basement Renovations
For many, the basement becomes a cool and refreshing refuge from the summer heat. Whether you’re renovating it for yourself or to create a rental space for some extra income – now is the perfect time to start. The list of possible renovations for your basement will depend entirely on what purpose it will serve but since summer is typically a dry season – this makes it the best time to proceed with these projects.
Again, depending on the purpose of the basement renovations, here are some ideas to help improve your basement: if your basement is unfinished, you’ll want to of course put up drywall and flooring (to save on costs consider using a laminate flooring), paint the walls in a brighter colour to make up for a lack of sunlight, upgrade light fixtures, and update outlet covers.
For larger projects or to create an apartment in your basement you’ll want to also add or upgrade the bathroom, add a kitchen, and create a separate entranceway for your tenants – if possible.
Exterior & Backyard Renovations
One of the most obvious projects to tackle in the summer is your backyard, and other exterior renovations. There are a lot of things you can do to help improve your property aesthetically such as: repaving your driveway, creating a garden or planting trees and hedges, refinishing your deck or porch, or even freshening up your wood or vinyl siding with a new coat of paint.
If you’re looking for upgrades or improvements to the functionality of your property some options to consider are re-doing your front walkway, upgrading your doors and windows to better looking and more energy efficient ones, putting in a new fence if yours is weathered or falling over, and adding in a porch or deck that you and your family can relax and entertain guests on.
Storing Your Equipment, Materials, & Possessions
When starting a new renovation project, it’s important that you’re prepared for every situation that may arise especially since these projects are notorious for taking longer than originally anticipated.
